Facilitation

Facilitation is a process when a group of people works on the best possible results with the support of a facilitator, whose role it is to make sure that all voices are heard and the atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation for diversity and inclusion are in focus. Digital facilitation requires competencies at the intersection of tech-knowledge and process-expertise as well as experience at working with groups.

Worth to know
  • The facilitator does not have to possess substantive knowledge regarding the topic that is being worked on by the group. Their task is to support the learning process.
  • In the case of online facilitation, knowledge of the working environment is crucial - good knowledge of the e-learning system and tools used during the course. This will allow the facilitator to focus on their work instead of having to solve their own technical difficulties.
  • Some of the mistakes most often made by facilitators are:
    • the facilitator taking the discussion over and leading it in their desired direction,
    • creating summaries that put the facilitator in the center of events,
    • taking the role of a good student who gets competitive with the other users,
    • creating multiple questions and setting additional challenges that complicate the discussed problem,
    • sharing their own experiences, demonstrating their knowledge, views, and familiarity with the content or sources.
